What is linkbuilding?

Jul 5, 2024 | Glossary

Link building is one of the oldest – and still one of the most effective – search engine optimization techniques today. Simply put, this is obtaining backlinks to a desired web page on your website.

Why does link building work?

Link building is an indicator for Google to estimate the relevance and popularity of a website and web page. The more websites link to your page, the more important and relevant it must be, right?

This is partly true. One of the aspects on which Google bases the ranking of a web page is the number of links from different websites. It is important that the number of links is ‘naturally built up’. If link building complies with the rules, it falls under white hat SEO techniques. Are you going against Google’s rules? Then we call that black hat seo.

Relevant links

More important than the number of links, when it comes to link building, it is important to get as many ‘relevant’ links to your web page as possible. The relevance is determined based on the subject of both pages and the anchor text of the link. You should also look at the quality of the link. Take the page authority and the domain authority into account.

Tip: quality over quantity.
