What is a funnel?

Jul 3, 2024 | Glossary

Do you already have an online platform, but do you have the feeling that things could be improved or that nothing is happening? Then there is a very good chance that your funnel needs to be optimized. That starts with gaining insight into the funnel.

Many entrepreneurs still make the mistake of only having an online presence. But the fact is that no one will automatically end up at your website or webshop. For this you will have to set up a funnel.

Meaning of a funnel

A funnel is an imaginary funnel on a website or webshop. This funnel ‘trains people’ from visitors to converters. Potential visitors, or potential leads called, go through a process and are edited until a conversion occurs and they emerge from the bottom of the ‘funnel’.

How important is a funnel?

It is a fact that a funnel is crucial if you want to create an online business. It doesn’t matter whether you sell courses, have an online store or sell a service. In all cases you need a funnel.

A funnel can be used widely. A commonly used method is to train high-level visitors into leads that will ultimately purchase your product or service. You initially specify how you guide visitors into the funnel, for example by: social media. These visitors are then increasingly filtered through various – logically consecutive – steps in the process within the customer experience.

Target audience

Reach the target group throughout the customer journey at every stage of the funnel
Improve the contact moment
Get in touch with your target group earlier at the beginning of the funnel
Marketing mix

Marketing mix tailored to the customer phase within the funnel for an optimal customer experience

How do I gain insight into my funnel?

Of course, this question is only useful if you have already determined what your funnel is.  This is a step that makes us at Monkeybridge enthusiastic. The answer is through data. Data is the key here. The time when entrepreneurs had to rely on their gut feeling is over. Everything can be investigated and analyzed. Now it is important to apply this.

Doubts about your funnel? Present it to us!
Only the necessary data can be made transparent through web analytics and marketing dashboards. Let us measure and process all the data, then we will only show you the data necessary for the decisions.

Below is an example of a funnel, which clearly shows how many visitors drop out with each subsequent step. In this way, the funnel can be optimized, which will ultimately lead to more sales or leads.

It is crucial to discover whether a funnel is already receiving enough right visitors, but not converting or whether that is the first step to bring the right visitors to the online platform. Determining this can only be done by making the data transparent.

How do I improve my funnel?

A funnel can be divided into various phases, see also the image at the beginning of this page. Once you know which phase a problem is in, it is important to determine the right service within a specified online strategy. An example has been worked out for the first three phases within the funnel

Awareness

In the awareness phase it is important to collect as many correct visitors as possible. Monkeybridge does this using a inbound marketing strategy.

Consideration
Convert visitors into leads and/or ensure that visitors trust your company and get the information to justify their purchase from you.
Decision
Attract new visitors to your website with a concrete purchasing intention or convert leads into customers. This is the phase in which sales of new customers are achieved.
Below we have listed some useful services for the first three phases. It should be noted that many services can be useful in all phases, an example is search engine optimization. In order not to place all services everywhere, we have made a distinction in priority, how important is a service in a phase.
