What is HTTPS?

Jul 5, 2024 | Glossary

HTTPS stands for HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure and is a secure connection that allows you to surf the internet. As a website owner, you can decide for yourself whether visitors are received via an HTTPS connection or an HTTP connection. The difference is that HTTPS is simply more secure than an HTTP connection.

Google sets the price

HTTPS is now the new standard. If it were up to Google, all websites should switch to an https connection.

Currently, it is at least expected that login portals and payment environments are secured by means of an HTTPS connection and in many cases this is already the case.

How do I set up an HTTPS connection?

An HTTPS connection is set up at server level, at the host where the website is located. Briefly in a nutshell: an SSL certificate can be installed on the server, after which you can have an HTTPS connection.

Of course there is much more to it. It is important that an SSL certificate is installed correctly the first time to avoid unnecessary costs. We recommend contacting your website builder before simply installing an SSL certificate.

What does an HTTPS connection do

An HTTPS connection encrypts the data, making it impossible for outsiders with bad intentions to find out what data is being sent.

An HTTPS connection can be recognized by 1 of these 2 styles in the address bar of your browser:
